Fifty years ago flat-pack furniture wasnt even a thing. Twenty years ago it was all about brick and mortar. Ten years ago that habit moved online to mass retailers like eBay and Amazon. Today its all about the buzzy startupthink: DTC brands ranging from Burrow to Great Jones promising a hyper-curated selection of photo-ready goods.But theres a whole other avenue thats received considerably less press (so far):Instagram shopping.
It started innocently enough. Maybe we tapped on a fashion bloggers latest silk skirt purchase and ended up down the rabbit hole of that brands feed. Fast-forward a couple months, and said silk skirt was on regular rotation in our wardrobe. (They dont call them influencers for nothing!) Now, though, the habit has translated into our homes, with interior designers, brands, and other social media creatives essentially dictating what we crave by showing us a constant stream of pampas grass, velvet ottomans, and Noguchi lanterns. In essence, Instagram has become the millennial version of catalog shoppingonly arguably more authentic and diverse.
