As the director of Style Club at Saks Fifth Avenue in Troy, it’s Ashley Robinson’s job to make people look good — a role she says she was born for. “Styling comes naturally to me,” says the Detroit native, who started her fashion career in New York before relocating back to Michigan in 2016.

Aside from her day job, the mom to Declan, 4, and Brooklyn, 16 months, has a lifestyle blog called “So Then There Were Three” (“I need to change the name since having Baby No. 2,” she laughs), where she writes about everything from seasonal fashion finds to cute outfits for kids. We ask her about the inspiration behind her own style.

Have you always been interested in fashion? Yes, since I was a little girl putting mismatched outfits on. I remember my mom saying to me, “Ashley, that does not match!” I began my career in New York, where I was a fashion assistant at a magazine and worked in a millinery showroom before getting into boutique retail. That’s where I truly fell in love with styling.

What inspired you to start your blog? When I was pregnant with my son, I was overwhelmed and scared that I wasn’t going to be a great mother or that I’d lose who I am. I used my blog to speak about my thoughts and anxiety — and, of course, what I was wearing or could not fit into.

Three words to describe your own style? Unique, effortless and fun.

Who are your style icons? My mother puts things together with such grace and ease. I still borrow from her closet. And actress Tracee Ellis Ross. She is perfection.

Your current must-have item? A really good combat boot. And I’m loving the fringe moment, from bags to dresses to shoes.

One item you can’t leave home without? Before COVID it was lipstick — I’d always have a fabulous lip on. Now it’s a fabulous lip and a mask.

You’re never fully dressed without… Confidence!

How do you look so put together with two little kids? As a working mom I’m always on the go and sometimes (OK, always) mentally exhausted, but putting on a fabulous outfit instantly changes my energy. That’s the power of fashion for me.

Do you have any work/life balance tips? I am still trying to figure that out! I always say there are not enough hours in the day. My family always comes first and I think that helps me to keep a perspective on things.

Your go-to for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Commonwealth and Rochester brunch house for breakfast or lunch, for sure. I love Eatori for dinner. It’s just the cutest little spot. My husband loves it especially because it reminds him of NYC. Oh, and Grey Ghost! We also love Evening Bar for an after dinner drink.

Where do you like to shop locally? Saks Fifth Avenue, of course.

Favorite quote or words to live by? Drink wine and be merry!
