The Best Denim Trends to Try this Summer

Denim has never been out of fashion, but 2022 is another big year for one of the firm fashion favorites. Whether it’s jeans, double denim, or even a denim skirt or dress, this season has everything covered.

If you don’t know the latest denim trends or which item you should add to your wardrobe, The Dom has you covered. Here are the best denim trends to try this Summer.

Upcycled

As more and more people and designers look to become more environmentally aware, fashion has taken a turn too. Upcycled jeans and denim are in, mixing shades, adding patchwork, and making your pieces as unique as possible.

Doing some arts and crafts on your clothing isn’t new, but this is the first time that it has been one of the leading trends.

Baggy

Baggy jeans were in style in the late 90s and early 2000s and quickly disappeared from the limelight once skinny jeans came to the fore. That has all changed again, and while skinny jeans are still in, baggy is back with a bang.

Especially in Summer, baggy jeans are far easier to wear and give your legs some room to breathe if it gets a bit too warm.

Light

Dark and black denim isn’t your only color option, and this Summer is the time to explore the others. Acid wash, white, cream, and other light and soft colors are the perfect combinations of denim style, but with colors that keep you cool and looking stylish.

Lighter shades are also easier to build outfits around, as you can wear different shades of blue without looking like you fell into a puddle of it.

Flared

You would be mistaken if you thought flared and bellbottom jeans were left in the 70s. One of the most famous Hippy staples not only never left shelves and wardrobes but are now back and bigger than ever.

Matched with a simple t-shirt or a Bohemian chic look, flared jeans are made for almost anyone and can be mixed and matched with so many different items in your closet.

Vintage

You don’t always have to visit a store or boutique to find your next pair of jeans, and the current vintage trend proves it. Runway shows and designers are showing that you should instead be looking at a second-hand store.

Vintage jeans are also perfect to match with more modern items to create a unique, on-trend look with the vintage feel you want.

Y2K-Inspired

The early 2000s are back, and with it, we’re getting low-waisted jeans and denim vests. While you don’t have to recreate every outfit from American Pie or whatever Christina Aguilera was wearing at the time, you can take inspiration from the period.

Low-waisted jeans aren’t for everyone, but if you have never owned or tried a pair on, there is no better time than now to get a pair.

Size-Inclusivity

While not a specific trend, jeans have always been an item that hasn’t been entirely size-inclusive. However, more labels and designers have expanded their ranges and created different shapes and cuts to suit almost anybody.

This means that if jeans just weren’t for you or your body shape before, now is the time to go out and find a pair that suits you best.

Double-Denim

Double-denim doesn’t have the best reputation (Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears spring to mind), but this look doesn’t always have to be bad. Weaning lighter denim softens the look, and pairing it with a white t-shirt under the jacket cuts the wall of denim.

While you may not want to go full denim during the day, adding the jacket for a night look completes the outfit.

Denim Jackets

Speaking of denim jackets, they’re another item that has been hovering under the radar for years now. Not only do they come in a variety of styles, but they’re a different take on denim that many people haven’t tried yet.

You can wear a denim jacket with leggings, a dress, skirts, shorts, or whatever else you choose; add a pair of combat boots and have a super-stylish and edgy look.

Embellished

Before your mind goes to those terrible Ed Hardy jeans we all saw in Jersey Shore back in the day, embellished jeans can range from a few jewels to an embroidered design. Patches and symbols have also become popular, with people buying plain jeans or denim jackets and adding their own embellishments.

While you shouldn’t go completely over the top with the gems and designs, they can still be a great addition to your outfit and add a bit of sparkle to a simple item.

Skirts & Dresses

Finally, garments that we don’t always associate with denim are skirts and dresses. While this can seem like a denin overload for some, if you pick the right styles and colors, you can make a very trendy and chic look.

If you don’t want bold denim, once again, you can choose white, cream or acid wash to soften the look, and rather use accessories and your shoes to add a pop of color or flare if you want.

There are plenty of denim trends so there is something for everyone! So hop on the train and start singing the blues – the denim blues!
