Understanding the psychology behind changes is a prerequisite for making a leap of digital transformation.

People think and learn differently. Cognition is a faculty for the processing of information, applying knowledge, and changing preferences. We can raise the total cognitive threshold by understanding ourselves deeply at the mindset level; continuous learning, practicing multidimensional thinking and reasoning.

Psychologically, one of the most influencing aspects of people's cognition is how they perceive the world around them and how they relate to it by applying diverse thought processes and making psychological adjustment appropriately. The truth is that each of us is a complex blend of contrasts – optimism vs. pessimism; objectivity vs. subjectivity, certainty vs. doubt, etc. with imperfect judgment to deal with complex situations facing us, and handle rising issues on a daily basis.

Optimism and pessimism are very fluid perceptual phenomena: We do tend to follow our conditioning as a normative cognitive impulse, but we tend to perceive reality in such a manner that we confirm our prior beliefs which are based on our own experiences, common sense, conventional wisdom in the local communities. Optimism and pessimism are psychological outlooks, the states of mind/heart and they may affect the approach one takes to accomplish a task, reflecting their dose of risk-taking appetite.

Optimism is built on a positive perception or a belief linked to one’s expectations. It is the view that looks for the best; the tendency to believe, expect or hope that things will turn out well. Your behavior, the way you showcase your attitude and mood others to put on their thinking cap. Pessimistic view will attribute most things as likely to go wrong, some of which may be down to the individual who has learned to be hopeless. People who are optimistic often proactively pursue the goals; while people who have learned to be more pessimistic tend not to think but react at work. Nothing is extreme; everything should be at the right dose, keep the cautiously optimistic attitude, stay energized and motivated to continually make accomplishments.

Objective vs. subjective views need to be clarified to improve judgmental intelligence:
We are all formed by our lives; the career/life experiences that we have, the people we meet, the media we follow, the cultural heritage we carry on, etc. No one is absolutely objective; it’s important to consciously limit the influence of our own biases to become more objective for making decisions. Being objective really means you will always see the two sides of a coin, listen to the stories from different perspectives; and understand things from cross-boundary perspectives.

Objectivity is a perceptual art as we try to interpret the world with accuracy when we interact with the world. Cognition reorganizes parts of one’s belief system; thoughts navigate within one’s present belief system as it is. It helps to develop in our personality, a value addition to our character by which we will be able to handle our life situations. A part of objectivity includes self-criticism and the ability to be open and flexible to new ways of thinking, keep the balanced viewpoint in order to make an objective judgment. Relative objectivity is a continual process in which we skirt the edge of “what is possible.”

Certain vs. doubt mentality enables people to deepen understanding of issues and broaden perspectives: We get bored due to certainty and look for discrepancies and anomalies; we get stressed from too much uncertainty and we seek something more solid on which to brace ourselves for getting results. Uncertainties give rise to the questions/problems, the certainties give rise to the contextualization of the problem. The mental shift between doubt and certainty is like taking a cognitive "step back" from the trees we're observing...and look at the continuum forest from above.

Doubts are the driving force behind artistic creation or scientific discovery. If we were "certain" about knowing everything or anything, then we are no longer interested in doing further research. Doubts about what you see at any given time propel you towards finding other things that haven't been observed yet. To keep us learning, growing, and exploring but to do it by extending from identifiable mental foundations -places in our cognitive experiences where we feel comfortable. The healthy psychology is: Certainty of good things and doubts about bad things = Optimism. Certainty of bad things and doubts about good things = Pessimism.

Human society is at a turning point that requires a significant adjustment in our evolutionary path rooted at the mindset level, either for driving changes or problem-solving. Digital is the era of cognition. As cognition can happen in many different ways and their combinations. One of the most influencing aspects of people's psychology is how they perceive the world around and how they relate to it, as well as their role in problem-creating or problem-solving. Psychology is the knowledge and insight of our mind; it’s important to enhance our “description of the world and ourselves within it.” Understanding the psychology behind changes is a prerequisite for making a leap of digital transformation.
